Gail, a fifty eight year old recently divorced woman, emailed me to see if she was too old to use a vibrator because she had never used one before. Of course, my immediate thoughts were: You go girl! Rev it up! However, given Gail’s age and the likelihood of her being post-menopausal alongside the inkling that she most likely had not had sex in a while (pure assumption),  I first suggested that she have a vaginal exam to assess the health of her vaginal tissues.

Estrogen is the hormone regulator of every organ in the body, including the vagina, a hollow muscular organ that stretches to accommodate a penis or a baby’s head. During peri-menopause (the years leading up to menopause) and menopause, the estrogen receptors decrease and this may lead to vaginal dryness.  Women who experience vaginal dryness may indeed have increased time to orgasm if they can at all.  Sexual sensation may decrease as well.

Gail had not been sexually active for several years and she had not had a period for as long and she did experience vaginal dryness. I asked Gail to make an appointment with me for a sexual health assessment and vaginal exam (I do not provide medical advice over the internet). This would also provide me with some time to talk to her about the available vibrators – if she still wanted to explore this.

When I examined Gail, she did indeed have vaginal dryness. Given the fact that her vaginal tissues were dry and thin, I suggested that she try RepaGyn®, a hormone free personal moisturizer with healing properties, daily for eight days and then twice weekly. I would expect that her vaginal tissues would start to feel better and she would have more success at reaching orgasm.

th-1Gail was all over this. We then went on to talk about revving things up with a personal vibrator. I recommended using a simple device since she had never used a vibrator before; I recommend that women use a good quality medical grade silicone product such as the Lelo Elise 2 with a water-based lubricant.

Gail was very happy to learn all that she did about her vagina and vibrators and now had more confidence to get going. As I always say, it is just as important to moisturize your vagina as it is your face and now you know one more thing that will help you get back to the bedroom whether you have a partner or not.
